Holiday Weekends in Newport

A visit to Newport during the holiday season offers many unique and enjoyable activities. You can still enjoy a walk on the beach or along the Cliff Walk. The many shops downtown provide a variety of potential holiday gifts that you will not find at the mall.

Many of the restaurants have their fireplaces blazing to provide a historic ambience that almost seems to bring you back in time.

For the past 39 years, the residents and businesses in downtown Newport have collaborated during the month of December to present Christmas in Newport. White candles illuminate the harborside wharves and the restored colonial homes of the Historic neighborhoods. Stroll down the first gas-light streets in America to enjoy a real get-a-way from the hustle of our current world.

Several of our favorite activities are:

• Fridays - 5pm - Enjoy the scenery and learn some history on a Holiday Lantern Tour conducted by the Newport Historical Society.
• Visit the Newport Mansions which are decorated for the holidays with evergreens and period ornaments.
• Skating outdoors to Christmas music at the Sovereign Bank Skating Center.
  

December 11th & 12th and December 18th & 19th

• Keeping Christmas with the Whitehornes - get a glimpse of holiday traditions from the early 1800's.
• Redwood Library Holiday Open House - tours, music and refreshments at the fist public lending library in the US.

• Bowen's Wharf Tree Lighting, Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive by boat to light the tree, and sing carols with Frosty the Snowman.

• Watch the Annual Holiday Parade of decorated boats tour the Harbor while enjoying wine & cheese at our reception at the Newport Harborside Inn.
